Espresso Coffee Maker Buying Guide

In the coffee world, there is nothing better than a perfect shot of espresso. The best part is that you no longer need to go to your local café to get one. So what should you be looking for in an espresso maker? Keep reading!

Start with a good grinder

Wait a second…I thought this was a buying guide for espresso? Well, believe it or not, the grinder you use on your coffee beans is going to be the first step in preparing great homemade espresso. If your grinder is lousy, your espresso will be lousy. It’s as simple as that.

So what constitutes a good grinder? For starters, it should be a burr grinder. This ensures that your beans will get a consistent grind and not be exposed to heat, as is the case with the ubiquitous blade grinder.

Ideally, your burr grinder will also have adjustable grinding settings and little static build-up post-grind. Additionally, you want your grinder to be easy to clean so that you can remove old stale coffee grounds from within.

Need some recommendations? If you have some money, I’d recommend you take a look at this one: Breville BCG820BSSXL Smart Grinder.

A bit short on dough? Take a look at the Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder. This is the one I own, and I don’t have any complaints.

Hands-on or hands-off?

Espresso machines range from manual to super-automatic, which means a lot of work or very little work. As you can guess, super-automatic espresso makers are expensive, whereas the manual types are cheaper. This doesn’t mean that super automatic makes better espresso though (i.e., price does not equal quality).

I recommend that you buy a machine that lines up with the amount of control you want in your espresso making. Semi-automatic and automatic espresso machines are a good middle ground here, as they allow you to control enough variables for experimenting and adjusting to your unique tastes.

However, if you don’t want to buy a new grinder, the super-automatic espresso maker might be the right choice for you, as it comes equipped with a built-in grinder.

The bottom line is that if you want something easy, you should look into automatic and super-automatic espresso machines.

If you want something that takes a bit more time, yet allows you to experiment with the different variables that come into play in the espresso-making process, go for a manual or semi-automatic espresso machine.

Lattes and More

One important factor in the espresso maker buying process is the type of drinks the machine is capable of making. When I bought my first espresso maker, all I wanted to do was create flavored lattes, so naturally, a steam wand was important to me.

While I haven’t seen many espresso makers without steam wands, they certainly do exist. So when you are on the hunt for an espresso maker, ask yourself what kind of drinks you expect to make.

If you plan to make a lot of milk-based espresso drinks like lattes and cappuccinos, you will want a machine with a great steam wand.

The steam wand should be quick, powerful, and not too messy. Make sure you focus on the steam wand performance when doing your research for an espresso maker. If, however, you only plan to drink espresso, don’t worry about the steam wand.

Temperature and pressure are key

Your future espresso machine should extract the coffee at between 8 and 10 bars of pressure if it’s a good one. This generally means that you should be looking for a machine that has a 15-bar gauge, which allows for enough pressure to settle down to the 8-10 bar range. A machine with more than a 15-bar gauge doesn’t make a difference, so long as you are extracting your espresso between 8-10 bars.

Slight variations in brew temperature can affect the taste of your espresso shot in drastic ways. If you extract a shot of espresso at too hot of a temperature, you will get a bitter shot. Too cold, your shot will likely be on the sour side.

To get the sweet-tasting espresso, you are after. You will need a machine that can reliably brew at a consistent and accurate temperature. Or, at the very least, a machine where you can adjust the temperatures to taste.

So, in the end, look for an espresso machine that reportedly has consistent and optimal temperatures or, at the least, adjustable temperature control.

Remember: price does not necessarily equal quality

Just because an espresso machine has a $1500 price tag does not mean that it is the cream of the crop. Similarly, a $200 machine does not make the espresso maker of poor quality. Ultimately, all you need is a machine that pulls great-tasting shots of espresso (and steams milk well if you’re a latte drinker).

Also, a machine that will last you for years is an extremely important quality to be looking for in an espresso maker.

Home espresso machines are getting better every day, so if you keep the points above in mind, you should end up with a pretty great machine that will hopefully last you a long time!
